Things like foreclosures and bankruptcies stay on your credit report for 7 years and there is not much you can do about it. Luckily the older these items get, the less influence they have on your overall score. Now focus on the things you can change positively-late payments, maxed out credit cards,collections etc. Find out what are the negative accounts that have the most detrimental effect on your credit (normally this would be late payments and credit debt spinning out of control) and take care of them first.

2 The triple D formula (document, dispute, delete).

These are the three successful pillars of fast credit repair. Dispute any incorrect information that you found on your credit report. Miscommunication between creditors and credit bureaus frequent and this explains why more than 40 % of credit reports contain errors. Disputing inaccurate information is the fastest way to raise your score. The next thing you have to keep in mind is that “deleted” negative accounts are far more beneficial for your credit score than “paid off” accounts. Negotiate with the collection agencies and agree to pay your account only if they remove the negative item from your credit report. If a late car or mortgage payment was just a one time incident, send a goodwill letter to your creditor explaining the circumstances around the late payment and asking them to remove it from your report. Don’t forget to document every step of the way. Sometimes you would reach an agreement with a customer representative for the deletion of a certain negative item just to find out the next time you call that there is no proof of this agreement.

3 Keep those old cards open.

Length of credit history is the third major factor in the credit score formula. Closing old credit accounts you no longer use will harm your credit score by reducing the length of your credit history. It will also reduce the amount of available overall credit and hence the debt to credit ratio. On the other hand, piggybacking someone else’s credit (having a trusted person with longer credit history add you as a user on his cards) will additionally increase the length of your credit history and will thus add points to your credit score. The tricky part? Finding that trusted person.

There are many ways to fix credit reports that do not require excessive financial effort. The more you know about the little secrets of the credit system, the better your chances to raise your score in short period of time.

Then, once you are done disputing, if you still have issues in your credit report you will need to move on to more advanced strategies, such as debt validation.

By realizing how these three things can stand in your way of credit repair success, you can use your awareness to avoid falling into these traps.

Credit repair seems to be the buzzword today. With our economy taking a long ride on the recession train, it seems that dozens of new credit repair companies spring up every week. This leaves the consumer with a sometimes terrorizing ordeal of trying to make the right decision concerning having an outside source repair their credit.

You obviously must be very careful when choosing the right company to help you improve your credit. Let’s look at some of the warning signs to help you avoid the scam artists who are prevalent in this industry.

Number One- If a company or individual wants a large fee upfront before any work has been done, run, don’t walk to the next exit. Many of these predators charge $500-$2500 upfront and are making a very good living doing absolutely nothing! Buyer beware.

Number Two- Avoid the pushy salesman who wants to rush you into a decision. Legitimate credit repair companies already understand the pressures that are on consumers today and our respectful of the individual making an informed decision when they are ready.

Number Three- Do your homework! Check them out on the Better Business Bureau’ s website to see if there is any derogatory or negative information on the company. Many times I’ve discovered several complaints lodged against a company and gone elsewhere with my business. Also be aware that not every business will be listed in the BBB’s database.

Number Four- Go to Google and do a search for that company to see if there is any negative information floating around cyberspace. Many times you will find great information about a company to help you make your decision.

Number Five- Ask the credit repair company if they have any referrals of people that don’t mind being contacted to see if they were satisfied with their services. Most of them won’t give you any because they keep their customers private, however listen to the way they respond to you. Sometimes their tone and demeanor will reveal a whole lot about the company.

In my experience, the legitimate companies that are doing great work for people to improve their credit are extremely hard to find. Years ago, I personally went from enjoying an 824 FICO score down to below the 500s because I lost my business. I was determined to restore my credit, so I will went about educating myself on the credit industry. I have since restored my credit and enjoy helping other people do the same without being ripped off. Companies that can help you tremendously in restoring your credit can be found, but you have to be careful. Very few are honest and reputable and reasonable in their pricing. You must make sure they don’t charge you without providing professional services and they should not charge flat monthly fees or large up-front fees. Additionally, make sure they do not lock you into long-term contracts.

If you follow my advice, you will be miles ahead of the majority and will save yourself alot of time and agony as you pursue your goal of achieving great credit.

A quick Internet search for “credit repair service” yields 13 million results. It is a big business! But what exactly does a credit repair service do? The claims can seem too good to be true. A credit repair service typically asserts that if you need good credit to buy a car or get a mortgage, the service has insider techniques for erasing bad credit. But the sales pitch is very carefully worded. They say they can help resolve questionable items, or clear up inaccuracies, or eliminate costly errors on your credit report. All at a low, affordable fee.

The Federal Trade Commission

Fortunately, at the very top of your Internet search result is a website you can trust: the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The FTC is blunt: they say that you should save your money because most credit repair services are scams.

Here is what the FTC says about anyone’s ability to erase accurate and timely information on your credit report: “It is illegal: No one can remove accurate negative information from your credit report”.

The fact is that credit repair services have no more legal rights or abilities than you do. If you want to pay a hefty fee to have a service try to accomplish what you could do yourself, it’s your choice. But remember that credit repair services cannot guarantee results.

What to Watch Out For

If you are considering a credit repair service, here’s how to tell if the company behind it is a scam:

o You are asked to pay in advance. Under the Federal Credit Repair Organizations Act, credit repair companies cannot demand payment until they have performed the promised service.

o You are told to dispute every item in your credit report regardless of its accuracy.

o You are not told that you could repair your credit report yourself for free.

o The company asks you to apply for credit under a different identity. This could be a felony!

o The company insists that you do not contact any of your creditors directly.

What Can You Do?

In the United States there are three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. These three companies report on consumer credit to lenders. It is their reports and the underlying information that you can examine and, if necessary, repair.

According to federal law, once a year you are entitled to request a free copy of your credit report from each of the three agencies. According to the U.S. Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you are also entitled to receive a copy of your report if a lender takes “adverse” action against you. To receive your reports, log onto annualcreditreport.com, or call 1-877-322-8228.

Examine the reports carefully. If you see any erroneous entries, or examples of good credit that have been omitted, then you must write a letter to the credit bureau. Explain exactly what you think the error or omission is. Send your letter by certified mail, return receipt requested. Send a copy of your letter, along with copies of relevant receipts or statements (do not send originals!), to the company that originally reported the transaction-a credit card company, your mortgage lender, or a retail store.

Unless they consider your request to be frivolous, the credit bureau has 30 days to investigate and reply. If an error is detected, federal law requires that consumer credit agencies and their sources follow a strict procedure to notify you and make corrections.

The bottom line is that a legitimate credit repair service will do nothing more than what you could do for yourself. It’s your choice.
